STOP MAKING DISTANCE GAMES :<

Posted by molkman - February 18th, 2011

SERIOUSLY.

It seems like every second game nowadays is a distance-travel-one-level-upgrade game. I really can't stand these games anymore, they all seem to be exactly the same now! To me it feels like it's just a really easy way to increase the gameplay time tenfold without actually adding more content.

So get over it already. SERIOUSLY. :<

Watchoo think, peeps?

Quick misc wrapup: New animation in the makings. Various games planned. Cupcakes stampede, baby!

I liked flight, and Im somewhat attracted to the genre still. I think if you throw a good spin on it and give a lot of effort then it's okay.

But most of them don't. Most just look like they just want to make a game and money fast.

Ok guys i got this idea, something has to travel somewhere, and you can make it travel faster or look cooler for money!! which you collect while it travels!!

Dont steal pls i want to be unique and original

Meh, I liked Canabalt myself. You've still got a point there, though. For instance, I would rather have Sonny 3 than basically a copy of a copy of a copy of a- you get where I'm going with this.

Distance games should rethink their gameplay.
Clicking a button to fire the button, then do the same thing in 15 mins time, does not equal fun.

I dislike how distance has become a genre. I especially dislike the games that are still completely randomized.

THAT'S SO 2005.

That's SO 2000-AND-LATE!

I disagree with you sir.

Then we shall be ENEMIES FOR THE REST OF OUR LIVES.

I made one before it was cool :P

So you're on the safe side, babe.

Somebody make a distance game where it shows the guy walking back for twenty minutes each time.

Or they could keep making them, and make all the other games look more original!

I like distance games with originality in it such as Toss the Turtle and Burrito Bison (to name a few). Distance games that require no effort involve like
clicking a single button then leaving the window tab open and do something else however is not accepted in the flash world. I don't like those games that require you to nonstop grind every step of the way just to waste your precious little time reaching the actual 'end' of the game.

Conclusion:

Distant games with meaning behind it (G)
Distant games with no meaning behind it (B)

Yeah, but by that reasoning you might as well stop making all games. Pretty much every basic game concept has been done before, it's all about putting a new spin on the foundation.

*Flight* is such a great distance game that there's not even a point for more of them to exist. And it is one of very few distance games that I like.

Very True indeed. I would say the distance traveled should be affected from timing (meaning as you go along you have to hit the right buttons at the right time to continue further). Berzerk Ball and Toss the turtle were my personal favorites, though both of them felt very much the same.

Me after clicking Burrito Bison: What's this?
Me after seeing story: Okay, this is going to be interesting.
Me after game starts: Oh. Another one.

Same for me, ha. I really love Juicy Beast, especially Feed The King. The name attracted me and I thought it was pretty funny and all until it turned out to be another distance game. It's was still pretty funny nonetheless.

When I was developing with a small english company in London, the interface designer made it clear that distance games were a crutch to get more money and views, and that it was not original at all.

Good job fatfuck.

That's the point I guess.

I DID write something about distance games here, but it wasn't going anywhere so I'll just say that you're a cool guy.

COOL. BRO.

Yeah, I really despise the distance/launcher genre. The only good one was Nanaca Crash, which didn't involve hours of pointless grinding for items and had actual skill involved. Toss the Turtle and Flight are both hopelessly boring and repetitive games and when I see the scores people give them it makes me depressed.

That is true, and about rpg, damn I hate rpg :D
From one way those games are addicting, but there is no point to play them.

I love dicks

I know

nice picture :D and yes i agree whats a long distance game? all the games they make and flashes arent good enought.. annd yes i do agree..:D
